Rebuild Samoa - Habitat for Humanity

                      Picture
The REBUILD SAMOA project with Habitat for Humanity provides a practical opportunity for Kiwi's with a can-do attitude to practically assist our neighbours in need.  Habitat is constructing over 300 traditional Falu in collaboration with the local community.  Steven is currently looking forward to joining a team in Samoa in late May 2010.  Habitat for Humanity is also currently working in Vanuatu, Chile and Haiti (find out more ...)

During the Black Plague that ravaged England poet John Donne lay on his own sickbed hearing the Church bells toll for the deceased.  He wrote:

                              "No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind;
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

He expressed two ideas - we are not alone in the universe, and we are inextricably interconnected.  Growing numbers of organizations have taken up the challenge to make a difference.  While we might think of humanitarian groups like Amnesty International or Red Cross, I was more interested in corporates, like Noel Leemings who supported particular organizations like Habitat for Humanity.  I call these ethical partnerships.  We cannot all work fulltime for Tear Fund or SPCA yet we can use our resources to change the world – one step at a time.

People are often curious about why I address this issue saying things like, "Aren't your clients struggling enough without caring for others?"   I believe that a part of becoming whole is developing the capacity to care deeply for others. When we hear about the horrors of child abuse like the case of little Nia from Rotorua we are drawn to respond in some way. When we take concrete steps to make a difference we affirm our connectedness and our compassion – or we are left to retreat towards guilt and denial.

The three D’s of helping seem to be
                      • Desire – Help the causes that stir your soul –it will motivate your involvement
                      • Direction – You can’t do everything – choose your involvements and develop them
                      • Depth – Invest deeply in the causes that stir your heart

                      World Vision Child Sponsorship

                      Picture
Having lived in Africa for 13 years I have seen firsthand the overwhelming deprivation of children born into poverty, and the scourge of AIDS that is currently strangling the continent.  I support World Vision because it rebuilds communities giving them a hope and a future.  This year marks a significant milestone for our family because the Nakonde community in Zambia where, my daughters sponsor same aged girls, are completing their 15 year development programme and no longer require outside aid.  This is a fantastic achievement and affirmation of the the adage, "Give someone a fish you feed them for a day, teach them to fish and feed them for a lifetime."

REST Counselling currently has another sponsor child in Zambia, however my plan is to sponsor the digging of a well in the Nakonde region of Zambia.  Diarrhoea is one of the top 3 killers of children in Africa, normally this is caused by polluted water supplies.  It is unacceptable to me that children should die from what is literally a passing inconvenience in the West.

                      Big Buddy New Zealand

The Big Buddy programme is a practical way for men to make a difference in the life of a fatherless youngster.  The Big Buddy philosophy is simple, "One man can't save the world... but he can make a world of difference to one boys life".  The programme currently covers the Auckland, Wellington and North Shore-Rodney regions of New Zealand, and is in the process of expanding their reach steadily, to cover the rest of New Zealand.  In our increasingly fatherless society Big Buddy offers a powerful and practical way to change the world - one step at a time.

                      Born to Bead

                      Picture
For those with a creative streak, bead maker Lisa-Jane offers an opportunity to participate in the Beads of Hope programme.  This programme honours the  incredible struggle and strength of children with cancer.  The bead makers make special glass beads which are presented to children as they go through treatment.  Some children have over 600 beads representing years in chemo, bone marrow treatments etc.  Learning to make the beads is comparatively simple and offers the opportunity to give the gift of beauty with meaning.
