1. Where do I find the application form? Many Clients struggled to fill in the official form correctly Steven has designed a simple online form that gathers the information required. If you fill online form out (here) The computer will generate you a correctly completed form for you to download and send to your local court.
2. When can I ask for Counselling? You can ask for counselling at any time, even if the Family Court is not already involved in the matter. If the Family Court is already involved, you can ask for counselling at any stage of the Court process.
3. How many hours will they pay for?The Court will pay for up to six counselling sessions in each 12-month period for a couple.
4. I don't want my partner/ ex to know I'm coming to counselling? The court's have changed the rules recently so they now only fund couples.
5. I'm not a New Zealander - can I still apply? If you are living in New Zealand you can apply for Court funded sessions.
6. How long will it take for Counselling to be approved?Different courts vary from as fast as 5 days to as long as 20 days to issue an approval letter. Recent changes have seen significant variations among the courts. If you are in crisis contact your counsellor directly for a private session prior to the court funded sessions.
7. Will 6 sessions be enough? Most REST Counselling counsellors are Imago trained or certified therapists. The communication strategy we teach takes most couples a minimum of 12 hours to learn. We couples to plan to fund an additional 6 hours. This allows sufficient time for most couples to learn confidently the base communication strategy that underpins successful relating. In my experience resolving childcare issues post separation can often be done in the 6 sessions. Working on long standing relationship issues tends to take longer - typically between 12 and 20 sessions. Given that problems tend emerge over years it makes sense that changing long standing patterns may take a while. The good thing about the six court funded sessions is that you should see some measurable improvement during that timeframe.
8. How long before I could see someone? This again varies significantly between counsellors. We try to see people within 2 weeks. If clients are able to do mid- morning/afternoon appointments it becomes a lot easier to be seen more quickly.
9. More Questions? If you have more questions you can look them up on online at the Family Court website or you can email your counsellor
