Steven Dromgool is a professional counsellor with a Masters degree from Massey University.  Steven has a special interest in men's issues in relationships.  A key realisation for Steven drawing out of the experience of his own marriage and subsequent divorce is how poorly men are prepared socially to achieve success in their relationships and the huge distress this causes them and their families.  His experience in counselling is that when men are given tools to succeed in their relationships they apply them quickly and effectively often with amazing results.

Steven established REST Counselling in Hamilton as a specialist practice for men.  During this time he contracted his services to the SAFE Network as part of the team establishing a treatment programme for adolescent sexual offenders.  Other work included being a live-in supervisor in a detox centre, working with at-risk youths at local schools, prioviding support services for an adventure programme for teenagers with intellectual and physical disabilities, and developing an anger management programme for adolescents.

With it soon becoming clear that men’s issues could not be dealt with effectively without addressing their effect on women and children, Steven expanded his practice and began working with women.  When Steven relocated to Auckland in 2003 he left the Hamilton practice in the capable hands of Mike Murphy-Scanlon who continues to run the practice. Initially Steven worked part-time in Auckland as a break from his main job as primary carer of two pre-school daughters.  This initiation survived he now works full-time in private practice in Central Auckland.

Steven contracts to Family Court and various Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP). He has worked with Youthline as part of the senior counselling team to deliver ACC and Family Court counselling and is now working part-time at Lifeworks Counselling doing relationship counselling.  Over the last 4 years Steven has been reflecting and working with clients on ways to increase resilience in clients and communities.  He is now working to develop wellness programmes for businesses to proactively improve the health and wellbeing of their employees.  A central focus of this is on how businesses benefit from strong home relationships.

Steven Dromgool is an active member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors MNZAC, advocating in respect of men's and family issues. At a community level, Steven is committed to promoting family friendly legislation and advocating for positive changes in New Zealand society.  A long-held dream is to establish a specialized facility providing wilderness and initiation opportunities for men.  To this end he has a purchased a wilderness block and has been learning all the ways not to build a hut.  However with the help and support of more talented others a liveable space is emerging.
